High School Clubs
Club Descriptions
- Asian Student Union: Asian Student Union will be for both Asian students and the entire student body. We will host events and celebrate Asian cultures from all countries. We will foster community and cultural exchange at WESS.
- ASPIRA: A Latin-educating club that advocates for and uplifts the voices of Hispanic communities. We host events and celebrations to showcase Hispanic culture and heritage. Open to everyone eager to learn and engage with Hispanic tradition.
- Aldeas: This club is dedicated to local and global community service projects and cultural exchange initiatives. It aims to foster a strong sense of social responsibility while broadening student perspectives on different communities.
- Art Club: A chill and fun environment to practice and explore art with your peers! No matter the experience or talent, have fun with us while we do activities around weekly themes or long-term projects.
- Best Buddies: A globally recognized program that fosters friendships between students with and without Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The WESS Chapter plans events to develop skills, boost confidence, and have fun with their buddies from Manhattan Star Academy (MSA).
- Black Student Union: The Black Student Union (BSU) at West End Secondary School (WESS) is a student-led organization that celebrates Black culture, identity, and history while promoting inclusivity and awareness within the school community. The group provides a supportive space for students to share experiences, engage in open dialogue, and lead initiatives that foster equity and understanding. Through events, discussions, and collaborations, the BSU works to amplify student voices and strengthen the sense of community at WESS.
- Business and Entrepreneurship Club: Analyze top companies; hold mock shark tanks to build members’ pitching & public speaking skills; run investment games to teach money management.
- Career Readiness Club: Helps students build real-world skills for future careers. Members will set up LinkedIn profiles, earn real certifications in tools like Excel and Google Sheets, and explore how technology and AI are shaping different industries.
- Chess Club: This club provides a welcoming space for students of all skill levels to play, learn, and appreciate the game of chess. Members can participate in casual matches, organized tournaments, and strategy lessons to sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Climbing Club: A local climbing club where you can go to improve your climbing abilities, learn from others, and discover new types of climbing. You can practice bouldering or top-roping.
- Community Service Club: The community service club is for people who want to help and interact with their communities. Whether you need community service hours or you just want to support others. No matter the size of the supporting action, they all have huge impacts on others. There will be in school and outside of school events and opportunities for everyone!
- Dance Club: The Dance Club explores various styles of dance, allowing students to learn choreography, express creativity, and improve their physical technique. The club prepares routines for school performances and aims to build confidence through movement.
- Debate Club: This club focuses on developing public speaking, critical thinking, and persuasive argumentation skills. Students research current events, construct strong arguments, and participate in formal debates on various topical issues.
- Feminist United: A gender advocacy club meant to uplift and inspire young women. A supportive space to connect and explore feminist issues. Through creative activities and events, members will learn, lead, and make a positive impact.
- Film Club: In each meeting, members will either be watching a movie or making one (as a class). No serious experience is required, but high dedication is expected, as filming will sometimes occur outside of school hours.
- Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA): Strives to create a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ community. The club advocates for different causes and collaborates with other affinity groups to create a more inclusive and welcoming school.
- Green team: The Green Team is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices within the school and community. Members work on projects like recycling programs, garden initiatives, and educating the student body about conservation.
- HOSA: A student-driven chapter of a national organization for those intending to go into medicine in the future (doctors, PTs, PAs, RNs, etc.). Members will learn about medicine, host events, and fundraise. No prior knowledge is needed, just a passion for healthcare.
- Jewish Student Union: A student organization dedicated to making a safe space for Jewish students to express themselves, advocate, and make positive change in the WESS Community. Students attend weekly meetings, holiday celebrations, and field trips.
- Law & Justice: The primary objective is for members to gain an understanding of how the legal world operates through entire group discussions on morals, debates on hypothetical cases, watching educational videos, and analyzing real-world legal cases.
- Math Tutoring Club: An opportunity for students to come to a supportive environment to strengthen their math skills and have fun. Members can receive assistance from peer tutors or an advisor. Interested tutors may receive community service hours.
- Model UN: Members get to learn and simulate the experiences of the real United Nations. Activities include learning processes, discussing prominent topics, fun mock debates, and attending external conferences.
- Newspaper Club (WESS Gazette): Runs WESS’s official school newspaper. Members learn various reporting strategies, report on topics of their choosing, and produce high-quality work for sections like sports, WESS news, and current events.
- Photography Club: Hosts bi-weekly meetings covering common photography topics and ways to improve photo-taking abilities. Activities include projects, photo contests, and frequent bake sales to raise money.
- POC Club: Aims to unite people of ALL cultures and to foster a sense of community through the sharing and celebrating of everyone’s cultures. Activities include school-wide events, lessons, activities, and movie nights.
- Politics Club: This club engages students in open discussions about current local, national, and international political affairs and systems of government. Members analyze policy, host mock elections, and promote informed civic engagement among peers.
- Table Tennis: This club offers a fun and competitive environment for students to play and improve their table tennis skills. The club organizes casual matches and potential school tournaments to foster coordination, quick reflexes, and good sportsmanship.
- Talk Show Club: Explore creative endeavors in the style of a talk show. Members can take up jobs such as writing, editing, filming, acting, and producing for episodic content posted on YouTube. Open to all creative people, even those with no film experience.
- Tennis Club: The tennis club is all about having fun, meeting new people, and getting out on the court. We’ll play for fun, and if we want, we can even set up our own little tournaments. We’ll figure out the best days and times together so it works for everyone.
- WESS Campaign Against Hunger: Discusses food injustices and hosts different events to help the homeless or people in need of food, such as food drives or making sandwiches.
- WESS High School Robotics Team: A collaborative competition team where members design, build, and code a robot for the First Robotics Competition (FRC). Members learn how to operate power tools, code, and market on social media.
- WESS Players (Drama Club): Puts on one production each year in the spring. Roles include acting, directing, tech, designing, or box office.
