Expeditions

The American Dream

What is the American Dream? Who has access to it, and what does it look like to achieve? Is it possible to achieve the American Dream without harming others?

For our first expedition of the year, we will be exploring the origins, evolution, and implications of the “American Dream” throughout American literature, American history, and American government. Students will be considering what it means to be successful, what it means to be American, and what it means to be free. The expedition will culminate in an artistic piece that answers the questions, “What is my American dream? What is my dream for America?”

Fieldwork: American Dream On the Street Interviews, Ellis Island, Federal Courthouse

 

The Museum

What is worth preserving? What do the things we choose to preserve reveal about what we value? For our second expedition of the year, “The Museum,” students design their own museum. This expedition will offer students a chance to use New York City as an extension of the classroom while they consider the significance of museums and the function of museums. They will have the ability to create a museum of something they think is significant and employ a wide range of creative skills in making the museum come to life. 

Fieldwork: Multi-Museum Investigative Fieldwork: Museums for this fieldwork have included - Natural History Museum, Public Library Special Collections, Intrepid, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Math, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters
